2022 Reading Survey

I wanted to categorize and place the books I read in 2022 into neat, little boxes.

These questions are taken and inspired by @gabbyreads all credit to her! The questions are taken from her YouTube video.

How many books did you read? Did you meet your goal?

My goal was to read 50 books, but that is the standard goal I set every year. Ultimately, I wanted to read more books than I read in 2021, which meant I needed to read more than 145 books. Good news, I did it! I read 146 books in 2022. I’m so excited I did this because I literally reached this goal about an hour before midnight on December 31st.

Most read genre?

According to StoryGraph my most read genre was contemporary. But my top 5 genres- in order- were contemporary, horror, literary, LGBTQIA+ (is this really a genre, though), and thriller.

Longest and shortest books you read.

The longest book I read this year was: A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas. This clocked in at 757 pages.

The shortest book I read this year was: The Backbone of the World by Stephen Graham Jones. This short story was

Favorite book published in 2022?

I read so many good books this year, but after way too much deliberation, I put Babel by RF Kuang in the number one spot. I just cannot stop thinking about this book. It had me laid out screaming on my bed while my roommate looked at me with massive concern.

Favorite debut book in 2022?

I read this book in one day and it is worthy of all of the hype it is getting.

Favorite book not published this year?

My favorite book I read this year that was not published this year is Bunny by Mona Awad. This book definitely is not for everyone, but it is for me. I am still confused about this book but I loved a book that makes leaves me with millions of questions.

A book that lived up to the hype.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry lived up to the hype for me I know this book is not for everyone, and I did not think it would be for me. But, I really actually enjoyed this book. It surprised me in the best ways possible.

A book that did NOT live up to the hype.

I feel like this is an obvious one. I knew I was going to hate this, but so many people love this book. I don’t see why this book is so popular, but if it makes you happy, then you do you.

A book that felt like the biggest accomplishment?

This felt like the biggest accomplishment because I knew I would hate this, but I am so glad that I know why this book sucks. And it was not an easy book to get through. Those letters to Ellen really ruin everything. So this isn’t a positive accomplishment, but it is technically an accomplishment.

Favorite character.

I really think Nora from Book Lovers is going to have to be my pick. I relate to her in almost every way. And, seeing her in a successful position in her career and personal life made me feel hopeful about my own life.

Least favorite character.

Lily Bloom from It Ends With Us was utterly insufferable. She made me want to gouge my eyes out. How I was able to finish this book with her as the main character is truly beyond me.

Most shocking book/moment.

Every moment in this book was shocking. If I were to say anything else, I would spoil all of the fun (and by fun, I mean pain).

Favorite couple/OTP.

Sel and Brianna from Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn are so adorable. I am not really a person who “ships” couples, but I cannot help but ship these characters together.

The best-written book you read this year.

Jennette McCurdy is such a prolific writer. I was encapsulated by every word in this book. She really has a natural talent for writing and I am so glad she is finally able to explore this aspect of herself.

A book that you pushed the most people to read in 2022.

I make every single person I know read this book. And, this year I started a book club at my school and picked this as the first book. So, this felt like the perfect book to answer this question with because it gives me a chance to shout out my book club.

Favorite book cover of the year.

I also have the OwlCrate edition of this book, and it really is just so stunning I love how shiny it is. I cannot stop looking at it.

Favorite book adaptation.

I didn’t watch a ton of adaptations, but there are a ton I want to watch.

What book made you cry the most?

I was listening to the audiobook and driving while reading this, and I was crying so much I actually had to pull over. This memoir is so beautiful and heartbreaking, I could not help but be brought near tears.

What book made you laugh the most?

These stories were weird and sad, don’t get me wrong, but there were so many scenes that were genuinely funny and definitely had me giggling to myself.

A new favorite author you discovered this year.

There were a lot of new authors I discovered this year, but Fonda Lee, the author of the Jade Bone Saga, really blew me away. Her ability to write fight scenes is unlike anything I have read before. She is such a talent, and I will read any other book she publishes.

What is the best non-fiction book you read this year?

There are so many books I could talk about here, but I want to shout this book out because it really helped spark my love for nonfiction this year.

I hope you enjoyed scrolling through this. Let me know what you think and let’s talk about the books we read this year!
