October Wrap Up

Here are all of the books I read in the month of October

October was a great reading month for me. However, some of the spooky books I was anticipating turned out to be mediocre. But, I have discovered my favorite book of the year (so far), which is super exciting. This was a wild month so I’m glad I made the time to read.

Books Read

Dictee by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha

no rating

This was a challenging book but, I am so glad I got to read it for my Asian Pacific American Literature class.

On Writing by Stephen King

no rating

This was great insight not only into King’s mind but also in to the craft of writing. Seeing where King comes from in terms of the craft was fascinating.

Saga vol. 9 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples

5 stars

This was a reread in anticipation for volume 10 of this graphic novel series. I am obsessed with this series and was so happy (but also devastated) to read this again.

Saga vol. 10 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples

5 stars

After such a long time waiting, this was a profound and amazing return to this world.

Clown in a Cornfield 2: Friendo Lives by Adam Cesare

4 stars

Slashers and sequels are always a hit or miss. Good news, I do think this book is a hit. It’s a bit outrageous, but it was an entertaining slasher, nothing more and nothing less.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

3 stars

This was an entertaining urban fantasy, but it was too long. The tension was not really present to help bolster the story.

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James

4.5 stars

This book shocked me. I did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I did, and I think the mix of real and paranormal was done well.

You’re Invited by Amanda Jayatissa

4 stars

This was an entertaining story, but I did not fully connect to the characters and the story. But, it was an entertaining read.

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

5 stars

Ms. Jackson has done it again. I don’t know how she was able to make a Carrie retelling relate so well to modern issues on race, but she did so masterfully. This was perfect for the season, but I know it’ll stick with me for a long time after the spooky season is over.

The White Album by Joan Didion

4 stars

I love Didion, but this was not my favorite collection of hers. This was forgettable, especially in the context of her other work.

Babel by R.F. Kuang

5 stars

If I could give this book six stars, I would. So far, this is the best book I have read this year. I am utterly destroyed and obsessed with this novel and I need more.

Bloodchild and Other Stories by Octavia E. Butler

5 stars

This collection of short stories is a masterclass in the science fiction genre. Anyone who likes sci-fi needs to read this book.

A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers

3 stars

This book was forgettable, which I feel is a very difficult thing for a story about a cannibal to pull off. I felt like the narrator rambled on and on, and at a certain point I just didn’t care about her story. I think this would have worked better as a shorter novel or even a novella. But as it stands, it is pretty boring.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

4.5 stars

This is a classic horror and I had a great time reading it. I don’t think it is the most memorable story, but it is truly beautiful.

After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3 stars

This was boring! I found the concept mildly interesting, but nothing stood out as special. I didn’t care about the outcome of this marriage; any way it would have gone I would have been fine either way. It was not bad, it was just boring.

November Reading Plans

I have a tiny TBR for November since I have been wanting to mood read. But, there are some books that I have to read for book clubs and buddy reads.

Thanks for reading! Let me know your thoughts on all of my socials. And, I hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween!
