Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
This was a fun, thrilling mystery. The setting was so fun. I am a sucker for a school setting, and this did not disapoint. The mystery aspect of this story is done well for the fact that it is a series. If this were a standalone, I would not have enjoyed this book as much as I did. But Johnson does a great job of reeling in the reader and keeping them guessing. It's not a super hard mystery to put together, but it is truly fun. It has the feel of a "classic"mystery, but with a modern twist. We switched between timeleines, and I really liked that aspect. It felt a little bit unneccessary at times, but I see why they were there. I liked that we were getting information about the case as our main character would be reading the transcripts. I love readin case transcripts and articles, and I love piecing together what happened with the same information the main character was getting. The main character is flawed but very relatable. I found the side characters a little trope-y but it did not feel too uncomfortable to read. The writing was well done; nothing too special, but it was good. I am really excited to continue with this series and to keep uncovering the secrets of this school and of this story. If you are looking for a classic feeling mystery set in contemporary times, I recommend this book.
