Books I Need to Read Before the End of the Year

There are just some books that I own or have seen that feel incredibly necessary for me to read as soon as I humanly can.

My TBR is never-ending. But, there are some books I have that I feel more drawn to than others. These books are ones that I want to read as soon as possible.

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

I am a massive Brandon Sanderson fan, and so the fact that I haven’t read his foray into sci-fi is ludacris. Lately, I haven’t been in a sci-fi or fantasy mood, but this will be the first book I pick up once I am.

Normal People by Sally Rooney

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Sally Rooney’s books, but booktuber, Jack Edwards, said this is a perfect book to read if you are in your early 20s, so that means I have to read it. Also, I keep seeing quotes from this book on TikTok that are so pretty. Since I’m in my ‘sad girl books’ era, this seems like a fantastic book for that niche.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímíde

I’ve had this book for so long, and I love the premise of this novel. I love dark academia and thrillers, so this is really shaping up to be a perfect read for me. I think the reason that I haven’t picked this up yet is that the main characters are teenagers, and recently I haven’t been loving books with teen main characters. But, I am still really excited about this book.

Lovely War by Julie Berry

This is another book I’ve had on my shelf for a while. I am obsessed with Greek mythology retellings, and I know this book is told from the point of view of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Historical fiction is hit-or-miss for me, so I am skeptical about this book, but I just need to bite the bullet and read it.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

I love an angry-woman novel, and I hear that the main character is very angry. I see this novel all over my TikTok and I really just want to know why everyone loves this book. And, this is one of my favorite covers so, I feel like I am doing this book a disservice by not reading and displaying it.

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead

I got this for my birthday, and I was so excited to read it because I know so many people who love this, but then I fell into a reading slump and didn’t read it. Now that I am out of my slump, I should have picked this up already, yet I haven’t.

Gallant by VE Schwab

VE Schwab is one of my favorite authors. I bought this book the week it was released (I dragged my partner at the time on vacation to get it, that’s how excited I was for it) but yet, I haven’t read it yet. I am not sure why I haven’t read it. I feel like I just keep not picking this up for some dumb reason. I just am dying to read this and need to read it as soon as possible.

NSFW by Isabel Kaplan

On a whim, I went to a signing of this at Book Soup and had such an amazing time listening to the author talk about this book. This sounds like such a “Remi” book, and the author was so much fun to talk to that I feel like I am going to find myself relating to a lot of this book. I think this will be a quick, yet hard-hitting read that I will really enjoy.

My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

I’ve had this for a long time, but very recently my friend, Sari from wowiread, read this and loved it. Her hype and praises made me excited for this book. I was already interested in this, but now I am buzzing and cannot wait to dive in.

My TBR is more expansive than this, but as of now, these are the books that I will get to as soon as possible. I am making it my mission to read these before the year is done. If I don’t, well then, I will be sad. But I do think this is an easy-ish list to get through and I am excited to see if these were worth my excitement.
